Computer-Assisted Reporting
NICAR is a program of Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. and the Missouri School of Journalism. Founded in 1989, NICAR has trained thousands of journalists in the practical skills of finding, prying loose and analyzing electronic information.

  • Detainee List: IRE and NICAR has converted the recently released list of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detainees from a PDF file to an Excel file. It was downloaded from the Department of Defense from this page: http://www.defenselink.mil/pubs/foi/. The official description of the file: "List of Individuals Detained by the Department of Defense at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from January 2002 through May 12, 2006. Document release date: May 15, 2006"
  • Shp2XML, code from Chase Davis of IRE and NICAR. Shp2XML is a Windows interface that converts shapefiles into Google Maps-ready XML in about three clicks of the mouse The story that accompanies this code is in the May/June 2006 issue of Uplink.
  • OpenInfo, from Brad Heath of The Detroit News, is an intranet tool built to search the full text of dozens of databases simultaneously, help users cross-reference the results against other databases (both internal and external), and to help the intranet administrators save time creating data searches. It also supports a query wizard, uses embedded maps, does some automatic cross-referencing of records, and has advanced searching options. The download also includes instructions and contact information.
  • Torok's CAR Tools: During the 2004 CAR Conference, Tom Torok, database editor at The New York Times, shared CAR SQL Server tools — including ways to handle nonstandard names, use ASP techniques and automate tasks. If you missed the conference, download a copy.

  • Math for journalists: Test your skills with this interactive test developed by Steve Doig, Arizona State University, and inspired by Phil Meyer, UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • Data subscriptions: The IRE and NICAR Database Library has added more data subscription services to help journalists meet deadlines and use the most recent data. This service makes regular updates of databases available through an online delivery service. Subscription services are available for the Federal Aviation Administration's aircraft registration database, the Airmen Directory, and the database of accidents and incidents.
